REDUCE

Beginning September 1, 2009 the towns of Hamilton and Wenham will begin a 3-month trial Carry-In, Carry-Out pilot program for all parks and fields. The Carry In, Carry Out concept is very simple: everything you bring into the park or field, you bring back home. For the duration of the pilot program, from September 1st through December 1st, trash barrels will be removed from all parks and fields in the two towns.

The benefits are easy to understand:

  • Less litter

  • Fewer insects, skunks and other wildlife rummaging in the trash

  • Fewer recyclables going into the waste stream

  • Less time spent on trash pick up leaving more time for park and field improvements

National and State parks including Ipswich Wildlife Sanctuary, Moseley Woods, and the Crane Estate and Beach are implementing Carry In, Carry Out with great success. For the concept to succeed in Hamilton and Wenham, the cooperation of all sports league coaches and players in the two towns will be essential. If the program meets with success it would be rolled-out permanently in both towns.

Keeping our community’s open spaces clean is a healthy, environmental and economically smart plan. Please join in the effort to keep Hamilton and Wenham parks and playing fields clean, safe, comfortable, and inviting for all.

BUKER SCHOOL RECYCLING (the first program this subcommittee put together)

At the morning assembly Linda asked all the Buker students to decide if a variety of different items including snack and juice cartons could be recycled.  Students gave each item a thumbs up or down to tell Linda whether to put it in a recycling bin or the regular trash barrel, and said they were surprised so many things could be recycled.  Then twelve Fifth graders distributed the bins to the teachers and everyone clapped.  Students and teachers seemed enthusiastic and appreciative.  We also had a message about Hamilton-Wenham GREEN in the Buker email newsletter.

Together we made a difference.  This was such a success, and accomplished in such a short time, that we’re going to see if the other schools might be interested in having us provide bins.

Thanks to all of you for your help.

In late October Linda Mastrianni, our teacher contact at Buker Elementary School, told us she planned an assembly about recycling for Thursday, but that neither Town Office had any bins.  Linda and her students needed twelve, one for each classroom.  We asked and you delivered!  By Thursday morning we had gathered 10 bins, which added to the two Linda had, made up the requisite dozen.  Several people contributed bins they no longer needed because they are using trash barrels identified by the free Recycling banner.  Others gave new ones they had purchased, and then the Town of Hamilton found it had 4 bins it could donate.
